Dinner at Al Dente Trattoria Esplanade

Went to Al Dente Trattoria on Saturday to have a pre-birthday celebration for CK and watch the fireworks for the NDP NE show. This was our second visit here, our first was in May when we had the pre-show set dinner before watching Phantom of the Opera. Today, there was only a limited menu available as the restaurant was updating the regular menu. Shucks, we were hoping to try the dishes on the regular menu, especially the much touted macademia scented creme brule.
For the main course, we had hawaiian pizza, grilled sausage fettuccine, sphagetti bolognaise and beef tenderloin. The pizza was a dissappointment, the crust was not crispy and the toppings was not as generous as the ones we had at Modestos. The fettuccine was a bit hard, not al dente and came with just a few slices of grilled sausage. The sphagetti bolognaise was better but really quite ordinary. Overall, we felt that the quality of the food has deteriorated, maybe because it was a busy Saturday night. Service was mediocre and our glasses of water was not topped up regularly. Some of the wait staff looked very young and 'blur'. The saving grace was being able to watch the flypast and fireworks from a vantage point on the rooftop of the restaurant.

For starters, we ordered the tomato basil bruschetta, grilled portabello mushrooms, beef carpaccio (thin slices of raw beef on a bed of rocket salad) and wild forest mushroom soup. When the soup was served, it was cold and not very presentable.

Total damage for dinner; a whopping $350/- (including a bottle of chianti for $53) for our party of six. I thought it was not value for money as I did not enjoy the food and service, even though the restaurant was in a prime location with its rooftop dining area which overlooks the Marina Bay. When I examined the bill after we had left the restaurant and made our way through the hordes of crowds after the fireworks, I was shocked to discover that the restaurant had overcharged us on some items. The mushroom soup was supposed to be $6/- but we were charged $60/- for 6 bowls of soup. The bill also included a smoked eel bruschetta for $10/- which we did not order, ours was a tomato bruschetta which was definitely less than $10/-. Not wanting to manoeuvre through the crowds to return to the restaurant again, I decided to call once we reached home. The person who took the call was very apologetic and acknowledged that they have overcharged us for some items. So we will have to make a trip down tomorrow again to rectify the bill. Morale of the story; always check your bill at restaurants as these things can happen.
